There are a few new developments in Congress today that I wanted to share with you.
The Literacy Involves Families Together (LIFT) Act is still alive and has a chance of being passed this session. This measure will extend and provide additional funding to the Even Start program. As you may remember, the LIFT Act was approved by the House on September 12, 2000. The Senate,
however, has not yet considered this bill. The latest information I have is that the both parties in the House and Senate are still working to get this
measure passed this year. To do this, they may try to attach the actual bill language to the L-HHS-ED funding bill. Again, I'll keep you posted.
Finally, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was passed by the Senate only minutes ago. The vote was 95 to zero. This bill will now be sent to the
President for his signature.
That's what I know for today. I will continue to try to keep you up to date on these and other issues as the Congress finally finishes their work for
the year.
