This is what I have found useful--
I ask a few learners to join with me as a committee to plan and prepare
for the event. Their input makes sure that the time and place are
appropriate; we do publicity together, and they know how to get their
friends and families and communities to come out. I can get flyers copied
and look after the mechanical things. If the learners on the committee
see the value of the event, and feel ownership of it, that word-of-mouth
info goes out. If a learner will be the MC, or be the press liason, or
make and serve refreshments, that info goes out too.
Once I had arranged for a dynamic (and expensive) person to come and
present a day-long anti-racism workshop for students at our campus. I was
afraid that the turn-out would be low because no one had ever heard of
him, so I recruited about 10 students who know me, and the speaker came
and did a "mini" workshop with those students, and we asked them to help
with running the main workshop and for help with publicity. The word got
out that the speaker was great and we got about 50 people out for the main
event.
