They were there to find out how they could prepare for and take the GED exam. As the Director of Outreach for the Literacy Assistance Center in NYC, I was there, at the invitation of the shelter's Literacy Coordinator, to provide them with information on preparation programs and testing sites. I would like to follow up with these women to see if the information I gave them was indeed helpful and how they used it. I'm wondering if anyone on this list has ever worked with women in a shelter situation and might offer some suggestions for effective ways to do this. The Literacy Coordinator shared with me that most women remain at the shelter from 6 months to a year and that follow up with them once they leave the shelter is very difficult. I would also be interested in any references for studies on what supports work best with women who are coming out of homelessness and want to get education.
