Today I met with a group of 8 women who live, with their children, in a
Family Shelter in the Bronx, NY. They were there to find out how they could
prepare for and take the GED exam. As the Director of Outreach for the
Literacy Assistance Center in NYC, I was there, at the invitation of the
shelter's Literacy Coordinator, to provide them with information on
preparation programs and testing sites. I would like to follow up with
these women to see if the information I gave them was indeed helpful and
how they used it. I'm wondering if anyone on this list has ever worked with
women in a shelter situation and might offer some suggestions for effective
ways to do this. The Literacy Coordinator shared with me that most women
remain at the shelter from 6 months to a year and that follow up with them
once they leave the shelter is very difficult. I would also be interested
in any references for studies on what supports work best with women who are
coming out of homelessness and want to get education.

Thanks-

Claire Deroche
