You can get calculators for students to practice with by contacting the GED Fulfillment Center, Dept. 191,Washington, DC 20055-0191, and requesting Item 251434. The cost is $7.00. For credit card and purchase orders, call (301) 604-0973 or fax (301) 604-0158. A transparent Casio oh-280 for use in the classroom with an overhead projector is also available for $35; request Item 251435. Other miscellaneous information on the GED 2002: Practice tests will be released in September 2001. The practice tests cannot be released any sooner because graduating seniors must take the exam in the spring of 2001 so that scoring norms can be established. Spanish and French language versions will not be available until January 2003. Therefore, the current Spanish and French versions will be in use throughout 2001 and 2002. The main content changes are increased emphasis on data analysis and statistics, on visual and graphic literacy, and on application as opposed to recall. The biggest changes will be in the new math test. There will be a question on trigonometric ratios. About 20% of the questions will be in an "alternate format", that is, not multiple choice. Since students will not be able simply to pick the correct answer from among five choices, continued emphasis on problem-solving skills - as well as practice with the new formats, which require students to fill in the answer they derive on a grid or coordinate plane - will be crucial to help students succeed.
