I was asked to pass this along to the list and I am passing it along with a recommendation that this might lead to interesting class activities. Some possibilities that I have thought about are discussions/essay writing on freedom of all speech vs. restrictions of offensive speech; discussions/essay writing on how do we define offensive speech; practice using the Internet; practice at activism through letter writing, email writing. If you do end up using this as a stimulus for a class activity-please share with us!
Here is the post:

Rap artist Eminem is scheduled to be a presenter and recipient at the
Grammy awards on CBS television February 21, 2001. His lyrics celebrate
and advocate violence against women, including in particular, Eminem's
wife and mother.

The Family Violence Prevention Fund has very good suggestions to let CBS and the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences know of the
offensiveness of this performer's material. They give websites where activists can ask CBS & the Academy to prevent Eminem from performing, urge CBS to run a PSA about domestic violence, and ask for another presenter to address the domestic violence issue and its impact on victims and our culture.
The campaign's web address is

Thank you for your attention.
