For more information contact: Meredith Dean Appalachian Women's Alliance P.O. Box 688 Floyd, VA 24091 540-745-5345 www.appalachianwomen.org The Appalachian Women's Alliance is holding its fifth annual Ironweed Festival, September 7-9, at the Hazel Green Academy for Lifelong Learning in Hazel Green, Kentucky. The Festival celebrates the artistic talent, regional leadership, and courageous lives of Appalachian women through music, storytelling, poetry, dance, and visual arts. Instead of maintaining the traditional division between audience and performer, this year's event will feature a collaborative experience for artists, activists, and women concerned about the issues facing women in Appalachia. Saturday evening will include a Cherokee Frybread Dinner and a Coffeehouse open to the public. Among the folks performing will be Reel World String Band and Angelyn DeBord. The cost for the entire retreat is $60 which includes room and board for Friday through Sunday, $30 for Saturday through Sunday, and $20 for Saturday evening's dinner and Coffeehouse only. Registration forms are available for the retreat through the Appalachian Women's Alliance (540) 745-5345 or at awa@swva.net. No pre-registration is required for the dinner and coffee house. For a map and detailed directions to Hazel Green, check out their website: www.hazelgreenacademy.org. Ironweed is organized by the Appalachian Women's Alliance, a grassroots network in six Appalachian states working to empower women around issues of domestic violence, racism, and economic justice. Strategies include leadership development, community organizing, and publication of the Appalachian Women's Journal. The Journal gives Appalachian women an opportunity to speak the truth of their own lives through poetry, artwork and short stories. Volume #12 is now available. The Alliance also organizes TheWomen's Caravan, offering workshops, performances, cultural sharing, group discussions and networking opportunities for Appalachian women by bringing these events into their home communities. This summer, the Women's Caravan completed its fifth trek through Appalachia. Ironweed reflects the Appalachian Women's Alliance's determination to grow as widespread as the tough, purple wildflower native to the Appalachians, which inspired the festival's name. ----------------- End Forwarded Message ----------------- Mev Miller WE LEARN Women Expanding € Literacy Education Action Resource Network 1483 Laurel Ave. St. Paul, MN 55104 651-646-0097 651-646-1153 mev@litwomen.org www.litwomen.org/WLindex.html
