I lived in Pakistan for a short while, and memories are being tapped. My experience there sent me into adult literacy. A very pooor country, maybe people here don't know what that means, and I didn't then, but the first thing that would have to change is water supply, guaranteed clean water. There is chronic sickness, and chronically sick people in a horrible climate can't work very well, help their families, and so on. Ignorance, just basic lack of knowledge about the Western world, or any place very far away. Reading a map is a learned technique, and some people I met didn't have it. Yes, I'm generalizing. Reading and writing, education--very very important. Ignorance and uncritical thinking are deadly. I would look back (mentally) to the US and see a wonderful blue and white bubble. Our country really is different from most of the rest of the world, at least 7/8's. I never wore a burqa, but dressed with long sleeved shirts and pants. I have noticed the silence, too. Andrea
