For all I know they have relatives who were pregnant at 17 and "made it." I expect not, but an explroation of the choices other family members made might be useful. I certainly think that sharing a value of financial independence is healthy! After all, what are the other options? I wish I could be a fly on the wall in your class! One of the teachers in the middle school where I worked with the principal was a human dynamo who behaved outrageously--or at least not by the book. Tall, thin, spike heels, from Texas (the school was in Boston), wore a red wig, she would harangue her students about how they wasted the money that taxpayers were giving them for their education! Sounds very un PC doesn't it? It worked, her students began to think, somehow her screeching got through to them, she seldom stopped talking, and they produced good work. She would call their parents and talk to them, she always had a line of parents on Parents' Night who wanted to talk with her about their children's performance. Very effective teacher. So she found her way, and it was absolutely her way. Andrea
