Hi,

In October 2001, there was some discussion about the
Black History
Month Theme for 2002. Below is information from the
Association for
the Study of African American Life and History's web site
concerning
the theme. In addition, January 31, 2002 (see below or the
ASALH web
site) is the "Call for Papers" for the ASALH October 2002
Conference.
I would think that annually at the October conference the
"Theme" for
Black History Month and the Conference Call for Papers for
the coming
year is decided and announced. I hope that this is helpful.

                                 Gerald Holmes

Announces The 2002 BLACK HISTORY MONTH THEME IS:

"COLOR LINE REVISITED: IS RACISM DEAD?"

The Black History Learning Resource Package is designed for
use by educators,
government agencies, church and fraternal groups, as well as
for individuals in
promoting the National Theme in February 2002 and throughout
the year.
Interdisciplinary, probing, provocative, and wide-ranging,
the National Black
History Month Theme for the year 2001 invites sober
reflection and critical
examination of the fundamental elements of the
African-American community. These
elements are presented within the broad historical legacy of
the African-American
experence in the evolving context of the new century.

The Black History Learning Resource Package consists of
original articles, essays,
and other materials organized into five chapters, each
focusing on an area of
particular significance to the African-American community.
The areas are: family,
church, politics, and culture. Each chapter contains (1)an
overview essay which
delineates significant historical themes and current issues
related to
understanding the materials, (2) essays and other relevant
documents, and
(3) a lesson plan, bibliographic materials, and suggested
activities for conveying
the national theme to the intended audiences.

Also included in the package is a wall poster and a
collection of graphic prints
of prominent black leaders for display. All items are
suitable for display.
