(LVA)and Laubach Literacy International (LLI), the two largest volunteer literacy organizations in the nation, are planning their first joint national conference for May 29 through June 1, 2002, at the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center in San Diego, California. Walter Anderson, chairman, CEO, and publisher of Parade Publications, is slated to speak at this year's Literacy for All banquet on Friday evening, May 31, 2002. A champion for literacy, Anderson has written several books including, "Courage is a Three-Letter Word" and "The Greatest Risk of All." Anderson has received many honors for his achievements, but he is particularly proud of serving as a national spokesman for GED, the program that enables high school dropouts to gain equivalency diplomas, and as a director of the National Dropout Prevention Fund. A high school dropout himself, the Kirkus Reviews has described Anderson as "the Dale Carnegie of our time." Other highlights of the LLI/LVA joint national conference include over 80 workshops covering such varied topics as: literacy program management and training, recruiting volunteers, English for Speakers of Other Languages instruction, learning disabilities, technology, women's literacy, workplace development, and correctional system literacy programs. "We expect that our joint conference will be the premier professional development event of the year for the volunteer literacy network," says Peter A. Waite, executive director of Laubach Literacy Action, LLI's domestic division. "Professionals in adult education will also find the conference to be a valuable resource." "Given the progress of te pending merger negotiations between our two organizations, this conference will be a wonderful opportunity to present the emerging vision for our new, merged organization," notes Marsha L. Tait, president of LVA. "We anticipate that literacy professionals and volunteers from a wide variety of programs domestically and abroad will attend." Laubach Literacy also plans to showcase its international work by offering speakers, workshops, and exhibits. One of this year's featured speakers, Dr. Indira Koithara, the managing trustee of Yuvaparivartan (Youth for Change) in Southern India, has dedicated her life to helping women living in slum communities. Dr. Koithara will be joined by representatives from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mexico in workshops on LLI's "Literacy Solutions" methodology. Robert Wedgeworth, president of LLI, points out that the joint national conference represents a major opportunity for Laubach. "It is allowing us to present the full range of our programs ¯ domestically, internationally, and in publishing ¯ to a much broader audience." Some 45 information booths and vendors are expected to fill the Literacy for All Exhibit Hall. New Readers Press, the publishing division of LLI, plans to display both new and tried-and-true favorite reading, writing, math, family literacy, ESOL, staff development, and training materials (including several important new books at the ESOL low-beginning level).
