Janet:

I have not read A Fine Balance, but I can suggest you if you have not read
this book: "May You Be the Mother of a Hundred Sons: A Journey among the
Women of India" by Elisabeth Bumiller. It is written by an american author
but well balanced and deals a great deal on caste system, socio-policial
forces that enforce them etc.
