I have been reading books on Afghanistan lately (wonder why) and I don't think fiction would get me any forwarder in the info department. Maps are excellent. However, fiction plays a GIGANTIC part of my life, and I really appreciate it when people tell me of books to read that they think give an accurate cultural picture. I wouldn't know what to read on India in the fiction department. Probably shouldn't mention "Kim" here. Actually, there is a series of mystery books which I have read, can't remember if written by an Indian or not. Also, the country is pretty big! I have read Naipaul (Trinidadian?) on Islam, he is dynamite. And the writer who was under (?) a fatwa, have read a couple of his books, they seem very good, don't know what others think. OK, how about an annotated Indian booklist? I would love that. >From the Design School here at Harvard I got out a gigantic picture book of the Moghul gardens in Kashmir, poured over it, loved the idea of sitting on a stone bridge over a series of garden waterfalls. I'm not sure why we are talking about this, except it's Friday afternoon and I'm thinking about gardens and India and caste and how lucky I am to be on a cross-cultural list! All this is very self-indulgent. Thanks Janet, Andrea
