Ujwala,

Adult literacy strikes again! You have sent me to a little book, "A New
History of India." New as of 1977, pp 417. I am also reading, for my work,
Amartya Sen, "Development as Freedom." I am positive this work is influenced
by religious/philosophical notions, I can feel it, but don't know how you
would classify his thinking. Of course US notions of development are also
religiously influenced--spreading the word, I guess.

Andrea
