It refers to my recent posting about SIBL. Here is Taylor's message: "I want to add my support and endorsement for this project. I have seen many fundraising opportunties during my affiliation with the literacy field and none of them have ever "floated my boat" like this one. For one thing, this project would not be possible without the passion and sacrifice of the SIBL founder. I think that it is important for the field to know that she hatched this idea and has made the sacrifices it takes to move it from an idea to reality - no small shakes! From the first moment I spoke with her about this project, I was touched by her sincerity and passion. I don't know about you, but understanding her motives was important to me and I can attest that they are sincere. We, in this field cannot afford to NOT join with those who take the initiative to do such a grand project on our behalf. (Oh that we had more individuals willing to do what needs to be done instead of sitting around telling us what we need to do.) Secondly, this is not just a fundraising opportunity. It is a public awareness campaign. Evey CD will have information about literacy on the liner notes. The CD will have appeal beyond the literacy field because of the quality of the music. Those that purchase it for entertainment sake will be exposed to the cause and will share both the music and the message with their friends and family. This is a calling card for your program and for the literacy effort. Another interesting point about this project is the potential to use the messages in the music and the books on which the songs are based in literacy curriculum. For example, Deborah's own contribution is based on the book "Angela's Ashes". I can imagine a class exploring the themes of poverty, alcoholism, education, religion, class, immigration and more using the music, the book and the movie. Many of you who know me, know that I am also passionate about using forums on these difficult issues to engage members of a community in solving their own problems. One component of the curriculum could be a town hall forum with learners using one of the existing issue guides - a strategy that would help get their voices into the public sphere! (If any one wants to pursue this, please call me! I'm very interested in seeing where this could go.) I have volunteered time to help support this project because I believe in it. I can imagine lots of possibilities for this project in the future and I know that Deborah is committed to building this project into an important supporter of literacy. I hope that you will join me in supporting this project. A friend who just sent me an instant message said he's going to encourage his local literacy program to participate so he can buy the CD from them because (in his words, but I agree) "It's Way Cool!" After 2 years of planning, the SIBL Project - Songs Inspired by Literature - is releasing the first benefit CD to raise awareness and funds for literacy. It features cuts by Bruce Springsteen and Suzanne Vega to name a few. These songs inspired by books will build a bridge between readers and non-reader through the universal language of music. The CD is a calling-card to wake up the media and alert the public to the magnificent work that all of you are doing to help build a more literate America. As a nonprofit funded in part by the State Library of California, The SIBL Project is committed to augmenting your outreach and fundraising efforts by creating innovative tools for you to use. These CDs have 16 tracks and promote 16 books. We sell them in packs of 16 - with a free carrying box that serves as a point-of purchase stand. Each CD is priced at $5 for you - then you sell them for $15 and make $10 pure profit / CD. WE have set up a web page just for you - you can learn about ways to use this CD - and you can download an order form. http://www.SIBLproject.org/programs.html Your tutors and learner all have connections through their jobs and communities. They are you ambassadors for literacy. Like the Girl Scout cookie campaign - they can hit the streets for you and get the country talking about books and literacy and the magic of reading. They can raise a great deal of money too. And most importantly, they will show those who have yet to walk into a literacy program that there is hope - that there is free help that they probably did not even know existed. We hope to work with all of you over the next few months. Please don't hesitate to call me directly at 415.553.3330. I look forward helping you in your efforts to increase growth and traffic in your literacy prorams by connecting to the public in a way that was not possible before. with heart and song - Deborah Pardes Founder The SIBL Project SIBL - Songs Inspired By Literature -artists for literacy - 415.553.3330 http://www.siblproject.org
