A note: I have recently been working toward the use of "they," "their," when talking and writing, rather than using "he/she." It is very liberating. I am also experimenting with substituting "people" for "men" when it is used to imply humankind. I am also going to start questionning the use of "men" rather than "men and women." This is a private little study of my own to see what I come up with. Another note: This is about sexual harrassment. I live in Cambridge, so news about Harvard is very local. You may have read about a change (it may be changed again) in reporting incidents of rape or assault--a woman will need witnesses. I didn't think much about this until I listened to a local talk show--in what other venue does a WOMAN need WITNESSES to corroberate what she says? It stopped me in my tracks. I think women are not heard. I think some sort of biological v-chip has been inserted into (I hate to say it) male brains that makes the auditory channels go numb when women speak. This is not a random observation on my part, I noticed an incidence of it today, another one yesterday, and one BIG ONE years ago from a lawyer which cost me financially. Have other women been in like situations? What do you hear from your students? How do you counter this? I expect it is so common I just zone it out. Wants to know in Cambridge. Andrea
