Of course -- we don't know how to talk about grief in this country. We tend to be in such shock we can't even begin to think about where to begin. I suppose we think it's too personal, and we don't have good words for it. Death exists for too many of us as something unreal on television, that happens to an actor who then appears next week again as though nothing happened. Or something done for emotional effect. Or something done for revenge, or as a problem-solving technique. Most of us have little experience with the reality of it. It's something that happens hidden away in a hospital, attended only by experts. It might be interesting to explore the concepts of death, dying, illness, grieving, perhaps from an intercultural perspective. Use the experience you just had to introduce the topic. Or ask the students why it was uncomfortable to talk about it beforehand. -------------------------------------------------------------- Sylvan Rainwater . sylvan@cccchs.org Clackamas County Children's Commission Oregon City, OR USA
