I agree with you that in any sane world looking for these divisions would 
make no sense. But our world is not particularly sane. And oppression 
exists, based on sexual orientation. This oppression ranges from subtle 
exclusion to outright murder. I think we're trying to address that 
oppression, because it affects our learning experience on all sorts of 
levels. Trying to get a handle on how many people we are dealing with is 
one way of trying to find out more about it so we can get clearer. I think 
part of what we're trying to do is to overcome the invisibility factor.

As I pointed out earlier, though, I think there are several problems with 
trying to assess percentages. And the issue you point out is also 
applicable -- not sure whether it makes a lot of sense to count members of 
various groups in order to accommodate them. But if we are at least aware 
of who is in our classes, it can help us facilitate their learning more 
effectively.
