Hi All,

I have worked with Parkdale Project Read in Toronto, Ontario (in Canada)
for many years - in recent years I led a women's group to try putting
into practice what I thought I had learned from my research on violence
and learning (the research that became the book Too Scared to Learn) and
more recently the program staff with the help of a group of tutors and
many participants in the program (and only a little input from me) has
been working on a project to try to integrate the learning from the
women's course and my research into the entire program. To help other
programs explore their own programs and strengthen them as a place of
learning for all - including those who have experienced violence - they
have developed an amazing tool. They would like your help to field test
it!

Here's what they say about the kit:
Outside the Box: Exploring the Impacts of Violence on Learning is a set
of cards with graphics, quotations, questions, and resource references
for literacy workers who want to begin to address the impact of violence
on learning. They are prompts to help you think about ways to make your
program a safe and welcoming place for those whose experiences with
violence have become a barrier to learning.

They are interested in how this tool can be used both in programs which
have been working with this issue for some time, and in programs which
have not considered violence and learning a focus. They will give a set
of cards to the first couple of programs to email them saying they want
to try them out and give Project Read feedback.

Please email them at:
projectread2@bellnet.ca

Let them know whether you have already done work in the area of violence
and learning in your program or not yet taken on this issue. They want
a range of programs to field test so that they can see who it works for
and think about changes they need to make before they take on a full
scale printing.

Thank you!
