In the Winter 2003 issue, there is information about sexual assault awareness. For example, did you know that in the United States, 78 women are forcibly raped each hour! If you are interested in discussing this in your classroom, the fact that April is sexual assault awareness month, may be a good way to introduce the topic. The goal of this month is to publicize the frequency of sexual violence in our society and how it can be prevented. Sexual assault includes a wide variety of crimes: rape, incest, sexual harassment, date rape, marital rape, and child molestation. The common thread of all sexual assault crimes is that they are motivated by the desire to violently control the victim through force, or manipulation. Many believe that victims/survivors of sexual assault are to blame. The purpose of this month is to debunk this myth and to promote understanding of the causes of sexual assault. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center has produced an organizing kit for Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). This kit includes stickers, a CD with official SAAM poster art, and teal ribbons, the color signifying sexual assault awareness month. The Center is also sponsoring a national Shout Out Against Sexual Violence on April 9.
