As noted in previous posts, some of us work or have worked with female literacy learners in prison. A recent Amnesty International USA report issued in March may help us understand a little bit about their lives in prison.
The report states that many US states fail to protect women in prsion from sexual misconduct and five states: Alabama, Minnesota, Oregon, Vermont, and Wisconsin, have no laws prohibiting such misconduct at all.
The report examines laws, policies, and practices in each state, the District of Columbia, and the US Bureau of Prisons, with regard to custodial sexual misconduct, as well as pregnancy, and childbirth in custody.
The report finds that only 2 states-Kansas and Oklahoma are close to conforming to Amnesty's standards for laws on custodial sexual misconduct.
Four states permit holding an inmate criminally liable for engaging in sexual conduct with a prison official, and in Arizona, an inmate who is raped can be charged.
The report is called Abuse of Women in Custody: Sexual Misconduct and Shackling of Pregnant Women can be found online at:
http://www.amnestyusa.org/rightsforall/women/
If any of you work with high level readers in prison and share this report with them, it would be great if you can share with us their responses!
