Daphne,

What a great topic, and I'd love to hear other experiences.

I grew up in an "alcohol culture," everyone drank, normally, and some very fine stuff, too!

So I drank a fair amount until a couple of things happened: 1) I became a member of a "food culture," big eaters, light drinkers. Now I have to be careful of how much I eat. 2) Alcohol slowed me down and affected my work, I was "loosing time" from my life. I also wanted to become a different person, more focused, and I wanted to use my time to accomplish something, so I quit cold turkey.

Last winter I started spending time with one of my "alcohol culture' friends, and by golly,I started to drink again! I checked this with my doc,and by gum alcohol goes very badly with some of the heavy meds I take. Now I have one drink a week, Friday night.

My father drank to stupefaction, pretty ugly stuff, and with me, drinking is associated with loss of control, so I don't like to be around guys who drink a lot, I leave the room party, etc.

I think one of the first lines of attack about this problem, could be medical--people should get liver function tests. Take a blood sample. Besides doing all the social damage, alcohol can kill you.

Andrea
