Hi Gail:

When you originally posted a message about this study, I mentioned to you that we were interested in this study because we were a large program working out of a community college.

EPCC/CEP has been involved in adult literacy and ABE since 1986 and is one of the most successful and innovative literacy programs around. I understand that the study was done in five states not to include Texas and that they were researching some things that we were not doing.

However, we have tremendous experience in how to work within a CC to develop successful and innovative strategies to take advantage of the CC position in communities to establish partnerships, procure funding and help the ABE students take advantage of all the resources in a CC.

We are also very familiar with the difficulties of working within a CC too.

It is too bad that the contributions that our program could make to this type of research is not within the scope of what the researchers are trying to identify. Hopefully, in future studies, they will choose to broaden their scope and consider exploring some of the successes that our college has had in promoting adult education.

Andres

Colleagues, The first working paper in CAAL's project to study the
role and potential of community colleges in adult education and
literacy has just been published. It is available as a pdf document
for download at no cost. Because so many listservs block e-mail
attachments, you can find the document at CAAL's web site
(www.caalusa.org), listed first in the left home page column under
CAAL Publications. The paper is titled Adult Basic Education &
Community Colleges In Five States: A Report from the California Adult
Student Assessment System (CASAS) to the Council for Advancement of
Adult Literacy. Gail S
