Q: What's New from NCSALL?

A: Research on Professional Development

How Teachers Change: A Study of Professional Development in Adult
Education

* Full Research Report (NCSALL Reports #25). Details findings from
NCSALL's Professional Development Study. The Study investigated how
practitioners change as a result of participating in one of three models
of professional development and which factors are most important in
influencing change. This report features a lengthy literature review of
research conducted to date on teachers' professional development.
Available at: http://ncsall.gse.harvard.edu/research/report25.pdf

* Report Summary (NCSALL Reports #25a). A substantially abbreviated
version of the full research report, this report summary provides an
overview of the Study's methods, and highlights key findings and
recommendations. Available at:
http://ncsall.gse.harvard.edu/research/report25a.pdf

The Characteristics and Concerns of Adult Basic Education Teachers

* Full Report (NCSALL Reports #26). Based on data gathered for the
study on How Teachers Change, this in-depth exploration documents what
is commonly known, but not well researched, about adult basic education
teachers, including the challenges they face, the training and
preparation they receive, and the conditions in which they work.
Available at: http://ncsall.gse.harvard.edu/research/report26.pdf

* Survey and Methodology for Assessing Adult Basic Education
Teachers' Characteristics and Concerns

* Survey Instrument. Developed by NCSALL Researchers for the
Professional Development Study, this instrument is one example of a
questionnaire that states or organizations could use to learn more about
the teachers working for them. Available at:
http://ncsall.gse.harvard.edu/research/report26_survey.pdf

NCSALL Study Circle Guides:

NCSALL Study Circle Guides provide facilitators with the information
and materials needed to carry out a study circle. A study circle is a
useful professional development methodology not unlike a book club.
NCSALL has published three new Study Circle Guides (available on our Web
site under "Teaching and Training Materials"):

* Learner Persistence in Adult Basic Education. Addresses research
that examines learner persistence, motivation, and retention in adult
basic education. Available at:
http://ncsall.gse.harvard.edu/teach.html. Scroll down to "Training
Materials" and click the links to download the Guide and associated
appendixes.

* Adult Multiple Intelligences. Addresses Howard Gardner's theory of
Multiple Intelligences (MI) and its application in the practice of adult
basic education. Available at:
http://ncsall.gse.harvard.edu/teach.html. Scroll down to "Training
Materials" and click the links to download the Guide and associated
appendixes.

* Teaching and Learning in Authentic Contexts. Addresses research that
examines the relationship between two dimensions of literacy instruction
(the degree of authenticity of activities and the degree of
teacher/student collaboration) and changes in the literacy practices of
students outside the classroom. Available at:
http://ncsall.gse.harvard.edu/teach.html. Scroll down to "Training
Materials" and click the links to download the Guide and associated
appendixes.

The National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy
(NCSALL) is a federally funded research and development center focused
solely on adult learning. A partnership of the Harvard University
Graduate School of Education, World Education, Rutgers University,
Portland State University in Oregon, and the Center for Literacy Studies
at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, NCSALL does research geared
towards improving practice in educational programs that serve adults
with limited literacy and English language skills, and those without a
high school diploma.
