According to the Unicef Report, The State of the World's Children 2004,
at least 9 million more girls than boys are left out of school each
year. More than 80% of all the girls who do not attend school live in
sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, East Asia, and the Pacific. The
obstacles that prevent/make it difficult for these girls to attend
school include schools being too far from home, lack of separate toilet
facilities, and threat of violence around the schoolyard. The report
calls for the recognition of the value of educating girls.
