To my query regarding the woman who has been abused by a lawyer, I was
sent this reply and I thought that the rest of the listserv might want
to know:

I would suggest that the woman contact the American Bar Association
Commission on Domestic Violence. They CANNOT provide her with direct
legal assistance, NOR can they put pressure on the state disciplinary
board. [The ABA has no power over state discipline; it's just a
voluntary association.]

However, there are great people working at the Commission on DV and I
know they are very interested in this issue. They could at least
provide her with some guidance and possibly (only possibly) someone in
her area who could help her more.

It is so discouraging (but, sadly, not surprising) that lawyer
disciplinary boards are still reacting this way. I will say that at
least some state lawyer disciplinary agencies and courts ARE taking the
position that DV is the basis for disciplining a lawyer.
