Today, when our President is being inaugurated, there are celebrations
and protests throughout the country. My guess is that the majority of
our learners are not part of either, and perhaps do not even consider
being part of a celebration or protest. I wonder why this is so. In
terms of celebrations is it because, most celebrations require either
invitations and therefore connections, or is it because most
celebrations require money for tickets? In terms of protests, is it
because many do not know about them?
I talked to some adult literacy teachers in Atlanta, who only knew of
today's big protest in downtown Atlanta, while it was happening.
Unfortunately, mainstream media did not do a very good job of alerting
people where and when the protest was to occur. Similar to our learners,
most of the teachers did not listen to stations such as NPR which did
announce the location of today's protest.
Some teachers did plan on viewing part of the inaugural events with
their students in the classroom, to use it as an impetus for vocabulary
growth and journal writing.
Do people think that it is a good idea to encourage learners to get
involved in political activities-to protest or celebrate various issues?
If no-why not? If yes-why-and how do we begin to get our learners to be
more involved?
Perhaps you do have involved learners-we would love to hear their
stories!
