As far as I know, only ESL programs typically include civics education
lessons. It seems to me that native speakers of English who are learners
in our programs would also benefit. What do people think?

In preparation for rallying and testifying at the recently held
state-wide
sponsored Children's Alliance Have A Heart Day held in Olympia, WA on
February 21, 2005, I coached two formerly homeless women enrolled in
WorkForce programs. One woman is a single mother raising two school age

daughters, and the other woman is a grandmother who is raising her two

grandchildren. I helped them prepare to make statements to senators and

representatives regarding legislation that has an impact on their
families'
health, education, and welfare benefits. Both women asked questions
that
made a positive impact on their legislators. In fact, the grandmother
has
since received additional communication from a senator who expressed
ignorance regarding an amendment to the current legislation affecting
her
benefits. This experience has caused me to ask the following question
of
adult educators involved with WorkForce education:

Do you include civics education in your program addressing legislative

issues for your qualified and potential voter constituencies?

Thank you,

Hallie
