Don,

This is a good question; one with many aspects to consider. My stance is
that I think that each of us in involved in literacy education must do what
we can to further relative and connective literacy needs of marginalized
women. I would stress our civic duty to stay abreast of legislation
affecting the health, education, and welfare of the population we serve and
to become active in contacting our legislators. In addition, I believe it is
necessary to provide lessons in civics to our students for the purpose of
helping them find a voice in the political process. Most ABE, GED, and EDP's
do not offer civics education. Stacy found a need for civics with her
population as did Vicki and Meg with REWA. I found that parents of First
Place students became empowered to speak up and seek answers when becoming
informed of legislation affecting their families. Of course, the caution is
to avoid allegiance to political parties or to show bias regarding
legislation - a point made by more than one respondent to my ListServ
question.

Thanks for sharing,

Hallie
