I quote from a psychologist I asked for advice: "....hope, like happiness, like positive self-esteem are the result of doing something well. And that something is likely to have a lot to do with handling with competence the problems and tasks of life that one and others value. People who have achieved hope....often have a clear sense of their future [that] comes from having learned to master the central problems of life related to work, relationsips, and self-development." I don't myself know who Klare Allen is, maybe Don will tell me! However, once long ago I made the steps toward the person I wanted to be, I had a model in my mind derived from experience and reading. Anyway, to quote Frost: "..and that has made all the difference." The technique worked for me, is still working, and I am curious to know if others have helped their students to do this. It seems to me that people who come to class for literacy help already imagine themselves as literate people, and may want to put their imaginings into reality. Andrea
