Call for Nomimations - International Literacy Prizes 2005

"Literacy and Sustainable Development" : the theme of the International
Literacy Prizes for 2005

UNESCO is inviting applications for the 2005 International Literacy Prizes,
awarded in recognition of the services of institutions, organizations or
individuals that have made outstanding contributions to the development of
literacy and basic education. The theme for this year is "Literacy and
Sustainable Development". Bearing in mind the valuable roles women play in
the creation of sustainable development and the disproportionately high
number of illiterate women, governments and NGOs are requested to submit
nominations on the theme of fostering sustainable development while at the
same time building gender parity in literacy and basic education.

For 37 years, the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes have served as a
major tool in raising public awareness and support for literacy. Amounting
to US$15,000 each, the prizes include the International Reading Association
Literacy Award and the King Sejong Literacy Prizes. In 2004, the
International Reading Association Literacy Award went to L'Edikasyon pu
travayer, a non governmental organization in Mauritius, chosen by the jury
for its adult literacy programme, which places the emphasis on women, its
respect for cultural context and use of mother languages. The two King
Sejong Literacy Prizes were awarded to Alfabetização Solidária (AlfaSol,
Brazil) and the Steering Group of Literacy Education in Qinghai Province
(China). AlfaSol is honoured for launching a literacy programme aimed at
four million illiterate adults, and based on an innovative, simple and
cost-effective model. The Steering Group of Literacy Education in Qinghai
Province responded to the needs of a large and geographically isolated
population, concentrating its efforts on women and various ethnic
minorities.

Submissions must be made no later than 30 April 2005 to the Literacy and
Non-Formal Education Section, Division of Basic Education, Email:
