Dear Sandy and others,

The rally at Union Square in New York City on Friday April 22nd, was a great
success. 3,000 people turned out making this the largest Adult Education
rally in the history of New York City. We had done a lot of work on getting
the media out which paid off-- including an article in the New York Times
the next day (www.glcnyc.org). Speakers included members of the City
Council, students, and practitioners. In this time when people in their
Adult Education programs might be feeling scared and alone, this gathering
of people was empowering for us and symbolic for the public. It was also a
very united group bringing together people from the four main sectors of
adult education in New York City--CUNY, the community based organizations,
the libraries, and the Board of Education.

Below are links to various articles and photos of the event and the issue.

> For those of you who will be in NYC, there will be a mass rally in support
of adult literacy education this Friday, April 22, at 10:00 a.m., in Union
Square. Well over 1,000 people are expected to attend, and speakers will
include city, state, and federal legislators, as well as students and other
advocates for adult education. This will be the largest rally in support of
adult literacy in New York City history.
> If anyone on this listserv attends, please tell us what it was like!
