For those of you who teach advanced literacy and cover health literacy and/or crtical thinking in the classroom, here is a piece of information that you may want to share with your learners:
Claiming scientific evidence, brochures warning that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer are sometimes given to women considering abortion during mandatory waiting periods in some states.
However, a leading medical journal, the Lancet claims that the conclusion of scientific reviews shows that there is no evidence of any link between abortion and breast cancer.
Some possible questions to inspire debate, further research, and critical thinking are:
1. Why would brochures be given to women when evidence shows the contrary?
2. How can women protect themselves from believing false information?
3. What are the facts surrounding breast cancer and abortion?
If any of you decide to cover this topic in the classroom, please let us know-we would love to hear about it!
