I recently came across an article in Ms. magazine (Fall, 2005, p.61) which provides information that could be an impetus for all kinds of activities in the adult classroom: graph reading, understanding the concept of rank, geography lessons, and civics lessons. Here are some of the facts listed in the article: United States scored 17th of 58 countries surveyed in gender equity. Sweden scored 1st of 58 countries surveyed in gender equity. Egypt scored 58 out of 58. The US ranked 8th in education for women, but for economic opportunity only 46th and in health only 42nd. The article includes the following quote: "It seems that American women, while they are able to enter the workforce fairly easily, do not have opportunities to advance their careers once they are part of it, and remain concentrated in lower-paid professions." Recommendations for the US include: maternity leave laws, affordable child care, and better reproductive health care.
