Susan -

The Benett Mechanical Aptitude Test is a pretty reliable workhorse for
assessing student capacity (and, to a certain degree, skill) with tools and
other mechanical relationships. Don't know the publisher right off hand,
but can find out if you wish.

In a different area, we use an instrument called Working to assess nine
aspects of work ethic/soft skills: responsibility, teamwork, quality,
systems thinking, desire to learn, problem-solving, skill at learning,
adapability, and persistence. The publisher is H&H Publishing - try
http://www.hhpublishing.com/WORKPage.html.

Hope this helps.
