Administration Seeks $30 M for Pre-School Teacher Training

Heads up, family literacy programs. Vice President Gore announced this month
the Administration is seeking $30M to help early childhood educators serving
high concentrations of poor children. Funds would help teachers improve
their knowledge and skills-particularly by promoting expertise in helping
children and families develop language and literacy skills. Under the
Administration’s reauthorization proposal for the Elementary and Secondary
Education Act, this funding requested for the FY2001 budget would provide
competitive grants to local partnerships. Partners would include entities
that offer professional development for teachers, such as universities, and
early childhood education programs such as local school districts and Head
Start agencies. Contact patricia_mckee@ed.gov
