Allotment Tables Set to Go

States are slated to receive their estimated FY 00 adult education state
grant allotment tables early next week. Tables do not include distribution
of amounts reserved for integrated English literacy and civics education
services under the terms of the FY 00 appropriations bill. The
appropriations legislation specifies these funds, amounting to $25.5
million, must be distributed on a different formula. Half of the funds must
be allocated to states with the largest absolute need for such services and
half allocated to states with the largest recent growth in need for such
services. We still are working on the formula for the EL/civics funding.
Also not included in the chart is 1.72% targeted to incentive awards.

164 Apply for $7M for EL/Civics

The English Literacy/Civics Education program received 164 applications for
just $7 million in FY 99 funds expected to support a limited number of
three-year demonstration projects. Funded applicants will demonstrate
innovative ways to provide English literacy/civics education--such as
integrating technology into the curriculum--how to build effective
strategies for professional development, and how to create curriculum and
assessment techniques in this emerging instructional area. Grants will be
announced this spring. Funds for FY 00 for English literacy/civics education
will be distributed on a formula (See above). Contact rebecca_moak@ed.gov
