Frances,

I understand we both worked in Literacy in Alaska, but I think you were gone
by the thiem I ran the Adult Education Program in Bristol Bay, Dillingham.

Kim has sung your praises to me. I am now the director at Ozarks Literacy
Council, and I'm trying to organize a network of all the little groups that
are doing ESOL tutoring many without training. I want to pool our resources
so we can get everyone trained, figure out how to get enough books for
learners who can't buy them, and not break OLC's budget.

Currently, I have a woman who is a public school teacher, but is an Hispanic
American who learned to speak and read English 15 years ago at OLC. Her
tutor told her to pass on what she had been given, and she is doing that.
The situation: She has 15 new Latino immigrants, no English, no jobs,
little clothing, food, little money. She has 9 tutors, completely
untrained, working with them.

I set up a training two weeks ago, and only four people signed up, so we
canceled. The next ESOL training is not until August. But, I think Carol
Conway can do it March 11 and 12. In the meantime, I'm getting them some
Steck Vaughan books to use for structure and am just giving them to them.
And, we will assess them all so I can ethically count them as ours and give
them books, etc. Then, we have scheduled on 2/28 a "Best of ESOL Practices"
inservice, which I was planning on just using tutors to staff, but I'm
wondering if I should make it a bit longer, and get some trainer to do it.
I, unfortunately, will be at the Missouri LIFT conference, and so will
Carol.

Do you know anyone else in Springfield that could do a mini-training just
for this group of tutors to give them some structure to work with until the
March training? We are requiring tutors to go through Basic Laubach
training first, but I'll make an exception for these people as their need is
great.

If you're in Carthage, I probably couldn't persuade you to come and do it,
could I? But maybe you can give me a reference. I'll call Jane Fast, also.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Karen Carlisle
Executive Director
