My name is Konstantin Mantzouranis and I am currently a grad. student (Applied Linguistics) at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. I am currently enrolled in "ESL Materials Development" and also "Theory and Practice in Adult ESL". I have attended courses in multicultural perspectives and various theories and principles lectures. My interest was sparked when I took a course in "Community Based Education in the United States". Since mid-February I have been a volunteer English tutor at HAPHI, Haitian-American Public Heath Initiatives in Mattapan, MA. The program prepares students in passing their mandatory INS citizenship examination. Since most of the material is completely irrelevant to the group's lived experiences and culture, we try 1st to "contextualize" this drab citizenship material to their Haitian perspective, thus engaging them in activities beyond rote learning and 2nd we engage in ESL instruction in order to improve the students' overall communicative competence. Thank you, Konstantin -----Original Message----- From: Heidi A.C. The list had been quiet of late so I thought it would be a good time to address all of you and encourge you to introduce yourselves. If you are new to the list, welcome! If you've been with us for a while, I hope you are getting the types of information you want and/or need about workplace literacy. And, finally, if you are NOT getting what you want from the list, please let us know -- your comments are important! It's been a while since Barb or I have introduced ourselves -- or asked you to introduce yourselves. So, please feel free to sign in, letting us know who you are, what you do, and what questions you might have about workplace literacy/workforce development. My name is Heidi Watson. I have been co-moderating the list with Barbra Van Horn since October 1999. I have been working in one capacity or another in Adult Education for the last 5 years. I have worked in community education organizations as a volunteer, as a literacy teacher, and as a workplace instructor. My main responsibility is to work on a project at the Institute for the Study of Adult Literacy that is examining basic skill competencies of workers in Pennsylvania. I am pleased to be given the opportunity to assist you and Barb in meeting the needs of the list. Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions. My email is haw6@psu.edu. Barbara Van Horn has been moderating this list since it's beginning. Barb's responsibilities at the Institute are vast.
