Whoops! Sorry about this -- I really didn't mean to reply to the whole list!
I had a number of interested responses and thought that I had replied to
each one separately, but I obviously slipped up on one. Anyway, if anyone
else is interested in having a look at our website, be my guest.

Billie:
Thanks for your interest in our GED Online programme! This program is all
internet-based. The student only needs access to the internet to get all of
the course content and homework. Homework is usually mailed back by email
(there are instructions to describe how to do this in the website). Since we
developed it at our College, we have no continuing costs (just the cost of
the instructor to teach/tutor students). We run an average of 8 students
since the GED is not a totally accepted credential up here.

If you would like to have a look around our website, just use this link in
your browser (Netscape or MS Internet Explorer or whatever):
http://cotr4.cotr.bc.ca:8900/webct/public/show_courses.pl
Then scroll down and click on GED. When you are prompted to enter a username
and password, enter NIFL (all uppercase) for both. Then click "OK". In the
next screen, click on GED again (right under the word "Courses") and you
should be let into the course. Follow the instructions in the website to
view the lessons available, or just "surf" the area.

Have a good look around and see what you think. If you have any questions,
suggestions, or trouble getting into the course, please let me know (WebCT
can be a bit "funny" to figure out if you haven't been there before!) We
will leave this password open for the next week or so.

Gina,
Please tell me what type of program you are using. Is it softwared-based?
What is the cost to your school? How many on-line students do you have?

Our college does offer GED prep over the internet. This is a very intensive
support, online, with all content included, for both GED Math and Writing
Skills. (There is some research to suggest that if a student can pass Math
and Writing Skills portions of the GED, he/she will most likely pass the
other 3 sections). We have had some success working with very rural
students. If this is of any interest to you, I can get you more information
(email me at bennett@cotr.bc.ca)

The state agency for which I work administers the TANF program. One of the
requirements for teen parents receiving cash assistance is to pursue a high
school diploma or GED if they don't already have one.

Many of the teen parents we serve in rural counties meet this requirement by
participating in GED preparation at small ABE outreach centers sponsored by
community colleges that are located in other counties.

In order to meet the accountability standards required under the WIA, the
community colleges find that the small satellite centers have become
unfeasible. They are unable to maintain the flexibility of schedule,
intensity and duration for substantial learning gains and necessary support
services expected of grantees. They are therefore opting for fewer sites
with more intensive services. Unfortunately, geographical distance is a
significant barrier for many of our teen parents.

I'm wondering if this is a problem in other states and what strategies are
being pursued to meet the needs of recipients in rural communities.
Thanks.
