At the Ripken Learning Center in Baltimore, we have experienced attendance
problems with our welfare-to-work learners. Recently we instituted a
recognition ceremony for all learners who have perfect attendance for the
week. Each learner who has perfect attendance receives a certificate in a
group ceremony. All learners who receive the certificate are entered in a
drawing for a prize. A name is picked from a hat and the winner receives
a gift (usually in the $5.00 - $10.00 range).

This recognition ceremony has boosted our attendance, as all the learners
want to get into the drawing for a gift. It was simple to implement this
recognition, and it has paid off well.
