Pugsley, Director, DAEL Office of Vocational and Adult Education Editor: Sarah Newcomb Production: Rose Tilghman November 20, 2000 - Special Edition ___________________________________ Shepherd New Deputy, Moak Acting PIB Chief Julia Shepherd has been selected the new Deputy Division Director for the Division of Adult Education and Literacy, Ron Pugsley announced today. Shepherd has worked for the Division of Adult Education and Literacy since 1989 and has extensive experience with the adult education field and federal education programs. She has been employed by the agency since 1971 and has been serving as Acting Deputy Division Director. Pugsley also announced that Rebecca Moak, who came to DAEL in February 1999, will serve as Acting Chief of DAEL’s Program Improvement Branch (PIB). Moak has over 25 year’s experience in adult education and came to the Department from the Virginia Department of Education. Congratulations to Julia and Rebecca! Public Forum on High Skills Communities Slated Here December 5 OVAE will hold a public forum on High Skills Communities on December 5 from 1:00-3:00 PM at the US Department of Education’s Barnard Auditorium in our headquarters building at 400 Maryland Avenue, SW. The forum is based on several months of research, focus groups and site visits to model programs nationwide. The forum is designed to help community leaders, including adult educators, learn about the benefits of involvement in community-wide efforts to encourage individuals to continue their education and explore new areas of learning. Students say electronic instruction helps them learn in depth, but they need better communication, self-discipline and knowledge of technology to get the most out of web-based instruction, according to ERIC Digest 218’s recap of a recent Ball State study. Teachers need better preparation and more time and effort to deliver electronic instruction, the study says. ETS studied the link between student achievement and three aspects of teaching that affect it: what teachers do in the classroom; professional development in support of classroom activities; and non-classroom factors such as levels of teacher education. In particular, hands-on classroom activities led to students to perform better on assessments in math and science.
