PBS LiteracyLink offers Workplace Essential Skills a series that consists
of 25 half-hour pre-GED level video programs. The series helps adults
develop the skills they need to locate and maintain jobs. Workplace
Essential Skills (WES), is currently available through videos, workbooks
and FREE online lessons.

GED Testing Service Executive Director Joan Auchter
says "Workplace Essential Skills is one of the best preparation for
students who won't be ready to pass the current GED test."

Workplace Essential Skills was created for pre-GED (6th to 8th-grade
reading level) adult learners. The tapes and workbooks will help students
move toward GED-level work-another focus of the LiteracyLink project. We
will be coming out with the GED series in August 2001.

Many public television stations have already scheduled broadcasts of
Workplace Essential Skills
[http://www.pbs.org/literacy/stations/stationshome.html] An individual
student may tape the broadcasts and use the tape for FREE for use in their
home. Please contact your local PBS station and ask if they are airing
the series and if they are not please request that they do broadcast it
for your community.

For more information on the series please see our web page about Workplace
Essential Skills at http://www.pbs.org/literacy/

Two Web-based ESL projects are now under development. One will offer
intermediate-level English instruction for adult learners. The other will
provide online professional development and other resources for adult ESL
educators.
