Campbell Sticks With Area I

Joyce Campbell, who has been doing “double duty” as both Area I Coordinator
and EL specialist, will work full-time with the State Grant Program in the
Northeastern and Midatlantic states, Ron Pugsley announced today. Joyce will
be transferring permanently to the Division of Adult Education and Literacy’
s (DAEL’s) Program Services Branch. DAEL will identify another education
specialist to work with the rapidly expanding area of English Literacy and
English Literacy/Civics Education in the Program Improvement Branch, Pugsley
said.

4 States Chosen For LD/TANF Project

Four states have been selected to participate in an initiative that will
build their capacity to meet needs of TANF clients with learning
disabilities who have not been successful in getting jobs. RI, VA, TN and OR
will participate in phase one of this multi-agency effort. They will develop
or expand state interagency collaborative systems to address the education,
training and work needs of these clients in transitioning to employment.
States were selected based on their level of commitment to address learning
disabilities in the TANF population. The second phase of the project will
extend the effort to an additional four to six states. The project is funded
by NIFL and OVAE, as well as by the Department of HHS’ Office of Family
Assistance. It is being conducted by the Seattle-King County Workforce
Development Board. Contact june_crawford@ed.gov or glenn_young@ed.gov

Youth Enrollment In Adult Ed Climbs

If you think more young learners are showing up in adult education programs,
you’re probably right. Enrollments by youth ages 16-18 are up 1% over the
previous year according to our most recent data report from states
(1998-99). Nearly half a million youth enrolled in adult education that
year, totaling 13% of the national adult education enrollment. States with
the highest youth enrollments included: PR at 42%; IN at 35%; LA at 33%; SD
at 29% and FL at 27%. Designing programs that interest younger as well as
mid-life and older adults can be challenging, but technology may help
generate some “universal” appeal.
