Committee Approves Bush Plan

President Bush's education agenda got good reviews from the Senate Health,
Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on March 8, when members approved
Bush's plan for K-12 schools by a vote of 20-0. The newly minted Better
Education for Students and Teachers (BEST) Act includes most of Bush's
proposals for reforming the nation's elementary and secondary school systems
by testing students and making schools accountable, press reports say.

Site Visits Confirmed For 6 States

The Division of Adult Education and Literacy has scheduled 2001 site visits
for six states: CA, IN, IL, MI, PA, and SC. Site visits are designed to
foster program improvement as well as to ensure that states administer adult
education programs as the law requires. The process involves a structured
review of documentation at ED headquarters followed by visits to state adult
education offices and local programs. The review team is slated to include a
state director of adult education from another state to supply a state
perspective to the process. Contact carroll_towey@ed.gov

States Seek Next Steps in LD

Eight states met in Alexandria this week to discuss current issues in
learning disabilities and to make recommendations to the federal government
on how to address them. The states (NH, RI, MD, DC, VA, AR, AZ, and OR) sent
interdisciplinary teams to the National Symposium on Learning Disabilities,
sponsored jointly by OVAE and NIFL March 11-13. The teams included
representatives of adult education, TANF, vocational rehabilitation,
one-stops, corrections, and non-profits. The meeting produced eight
federal-level recommendations. Examples include creating a federal
interagency taskforce and arriving at cross-agency agreement on definitions.
NIFL's part of the conference focused on developing trainers certified on LD
approaches. For more contact glenn_young@ed.gov
