LVA Gives 90 Affiliates Accreditation Congratulations to Literacy Volunteers of America for accrediting 90 of its 355 affiliates in 2000, the first year of its three-year accreditation cycle. The East Texas Literacy Council in Longview was first to be accredited. Regionally, 34 northeast affiliates, 17 southeast, 16 midwest, 15 west/southwest, six Pacific coast, and two Alaska affiliates received accreditation. Another seventy-five affiliates are slated for accreditation this year. Affiliates must meet 18 qualifying standards and ten scored standards to receive accreditation. LVA accreditation aims to continuously raise the performance threshold of affiliates and other literacy service providers through ongoing standardization of best practices. Contact tcarman@literacyvolunteers.org Comments Sought On Refugee Funds' Distribution The Office of Refugee Resettlement has issued a notice establishing the proposed FY 2001 allocations to states of funds for social services under the Refugee Resettlement Program (RRP). Comments are due May 29, 2001. This notice includes $20.5 million in two allocations. They provide: (1) outreach and referral to help eligible refugees access the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) or other programs for low-income working populations; and (2) outreach, referral, and social services to ensure that persons granted asylum can access programs to help them attain economic self-sufficiency.
