$32M For CTC Grants Now Available

Project applications are being sought for more than $32M for Community
Technology Centers (CTCs), the Department announced yesterday. CTCs
demonstrate the educational effectiveness of technology in low-income and
economically distressed urban and rural communities. The deadline for these
one-year grants is July 16. About 170 - 190 grants ranging from $75,000 -
$300,000 will be made to a broad range of eligible applicants. These funds
are FY 2001 funds remaining in the CTC program which is slated to be
consolidated in Educational Technology Grants under the President's budget
proposal. For more see wais.access.gpo.gov

LVA/Laubach Vote to Merge

Boards of Laubach Literacy International (LLI) and Literacy Volunteers of
America, Inc. (LVA), signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) this month
combining LLI and LVA in a new literacy organization based at Laubach
Literacy's Syracuse headquarters. The combined organization will have a new
name later this year and will begin operating on January 1, 2002. The merger
will allow the organizations to speak with one voice on policy issues and
provide adult students with the high quality instruction. For more see:

States Slow In Listing Locals

Heads up, State Directors. Just 19 states have responded to OVAE's request
for lists of local organizations receiving federal adult education funds. We
need this information to carry out the Adult Literacy and Lifeskills (ALL)
and the Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) studies now getting under way.
ALL is a large-scale international comparative look at a range of basic
skills linked to social and economic characteristics of individuals across
and within nations. AEL will provide information on the basic skills of
participants in federally funded adult education programs. If you're among
the missing, send the information to rose.tilghman@ed.gov
