Learning Lab Instructor

The Metropolitan Washington CareerPath Project is an innovative workforce development project that will place dislocated DC General Hospital employees in good jobs through upgrade and brush-up training and by developing employer/
union partnerships in healthcare, hospitality, and construction.  By convening both unions and employers by sector, CareerPath will provide effective services both to jobseekers and to employers in some of the major sectors in the region.  Although the project will begin by serving dislocated workers from DC General Hospital, the intention is to expand the program to serve the training and placement needs of both new workers and incumbent workers who are pursuing upgrades and career ladders.

Under the direction of the CareerPath Project Director, and in collaboration with the Training Coordinator, the Learning Lab Instructor&#8217;s tasks will include assisting with the development of curriculum and assessment procedures for participants in the CareerPath Project. The incumbent will work with program participants to help them achieve their academic and career goals through tutoring, small group instruction, classroom instruction, and computer assisted instruction. The incumbent will be an employee of The Community Services Agency of the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO.

Description of Major Duties
·   Help design and develop courses that meet the needs of employer, union, and local government workforce development systems, and that enhances the ability of workers to achieve the jobs and career paths that match their needs
·   Work with the Training Coordinator to develop an assessment and benchmarking process, building on the system already implemented by public workforce systems, that helps the program, employers, workers, and unions measure success
·   Work with learners individually and in small groups in the Learning Lab using Computer Assisted Instruction, Tutoring, and other educational methods
·   Teach Sector Basics classes including Introduction to Academic Success, Customer Service, and other courses that provide an introduction to jobs in a variety of sectors
·   Collect and report data on participant achievement 
·   Facilitate the learning of program participants by matching instructional intervention to Individual Employment Plans and other assessment data.
·   Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
·   Knowledge and experience with workplace training and education programs, particularly joint labor/management models
·   Knowledge of learner assessment and curriculum development
·   Experience teaching adult learners in a workplace or other non-traditional setting
·   Demonstrated ability to work with learners with diverse learning styles and academic levels
·   A Bachelors degree and 2 years of related experience, OR 3 or more years of related experience  
·   Familiarity with a variety of computer-based instructional programs
·   Experience with Computer-Assisted Instruction
·   Computer skills including use of a variety of word-processing, database, email, and other computer packages
·   Background in the labor movement and/or progressive organizations a plus.

Proposed starting date: Immediate

Salary:         To $50,000, with benefits, commensurate with
experience
