Senate Ponders ESEA Reauthorization

Senate has resumed consideration of S. 1 this week. The bill extends
programs and activities under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of
1965. The Senate is acting on a number of amendments addressing a broad
range of topics. Completing the bill this week appears unlikely.

Most States Meet/Exceed '00 Targets

Most states met or exceeded their Adult Education and Family Literacy Act
(AEFLA) performance targets, according to OVAE's preliminary analysis of
state-by-state performance data for 1999-2000. Data from state reports is
being prepared for a Report to Congress required by AEFLA. Many of the
performance targets negotiated with the Department tended to be at the low
end of the spectrum in this first year.

Grant to Boost AR Adult Ed Teachers' Math

The Rockefeller Foundation recently awarded the Arkansas Department of
Workforce Education $332,430 to develop and implement a Math Initiative. The
new effort will train all adult education teachers in alternative methods of
mathematics instruction and upgrade teachers' math skills. The pilot phase
will include developing a 15-module course curriculum and purchasing
manipulative training kits for all participants. Each module will stress one
math concept, using several manipulatives, which show the math connections.
Modules will be based on the NCTM Principles and Standards for School
Mathematics. Contact garland.hankins@mail.state.ar.us

the late Dr. Seuss. Brooks has been involved in efforts to promote reading
