ESL Teachers Join
In National
Symposium

Nearly 100 English as a second language teachers from across the
country participated in our National Symposium on Adult ESL Research
and Practice at the Smithsonian Institution here September 4 - 7.
OVAE sponsored the symposium in cooperation with the National Center
for ESL Literacy Education and the Smithsonian. Teachers were
nominated for the symposium by State Directors of adult education.
Teachers joined in discussions of challenges they face in adult
English literacy instruction and compared their "real world"
experiences with findings presented by nationally known researchers
on what works in teaching limited English-speaking adults and how
adults learn English. Participants also will have the opportunity to
attend International Literacy Day festivities September 7 and the
Library of Congress' National Book Festival hosted by First Lady
Laura Bush September 8.

OH Governor Taps
September as Adult
Literacy Month

Ohio Governor Bob Taft (R) recently designated September 2001 as
"Ohio Adult Literacy Month." This action is taken annually at the
request of the Ohio Literacy Network. "Every person deserves the
opportunity to learn to read, and it is never too late to begin
reading," Taft said in his declaration. "I am proud of the many Ohio
adults who are taking this step and of the volunteers, teachers,
families, and friends who are supporting them along the way." For a

Minnesota State Director Barry Shaffer recently announced a new
PEGASUS Award for Program Excellence to be granted annually to one

criteria are based on the ABE Quality Indicators and criteria unique
to the type of ABE program. Applications will be available starting
in January 2002. Contact Barry.Shaffer@state.mn.us or see
