The House Appropriations Subcommittee postponed until next week its mark =
up of FY 2002 appropriations for labor, health and human services and =
education programs, slated for September 25. By a vote of 392-0, the =
House passed HJ Res 65 on September 24, providing continuing =
appropriations to keep programs going through October 16. The Senate =
approved the same resolution on September 25.
MD Gets Adult Ed=20
Task Force=20
The Maryland State Department of Education announced last week =
appointments to the task force established by state law to study adult =
education. Kathleen McKirchy, Executive Director of the Community =
Services Agency, Metropolitan Washington Council AFL-CIO will serve as =
Chair. The task force will study: the need for adult education services =
in Maryland; the impact on the workforce; existing service levels, =
including a category of services for the incarcerated; current funding =
process and funding levels; and how Maryland's adult education system =
compares to those of other states. The task force is expected to make =
recommendations to the Governor and the General Assembly early this =

GA Celebrates=20
Literacy Week=20
Georgia Governor Roy Barnes (D) recently released a proclamation =
continuing a tradition that designates the first week in September as =
"Literacy Week" throughout the state. Literacy week convenes literacy =
leaders, providers, employers and supporters to share information, =
exchange ideas, and report on research and planning for future literacy =
initiatives. The Georgia Office of Adult Literacy hosted its annual =
Adult Literacy Celebration, bringing together over 1200 students, =
teachers, administrators and businesses statewide. The celebration =
featured presentation of the Governor's Workplace Learning Awards to =
Georgia businesses sponsoring workplace learning programs. Contact =
